What are queues
Solution
Generally speaking, most lists will have thousands and possibly even tens-of-thousands of users. This puts the server under tremendous strain when trying to send an email. To ease the strain on the server and prevent errors occurring, SM2's Email Marketing Component includes a queuing system. This system puts a ten-second gap between sends by default, however this is an option under the configuration menu as is the number of emails it sends at a time.
How big can the Queue be?
This is very much dependent on your server. Because the request to send the message, and thereby add recipients to the Queue, is done via the web there is a limited amount of time in which to generate the recipients in the Queue before the server will timeout. This timeout figure is server dependent but is usually in the area of 30 - 90 seconds.
SM2 Email Marketing has been optimised to make the Queue insertion as quick as possible. It has been tested as being able to generate a Queue from a List of 250,000 subscribers in under 90 seconds.
This test Queue was generated on an average server specification using the List plugin. Other plugins and other server specifications may have varying results as to what they are capable of handling.
Server CPU, Memory, utilisation (i.e. how many sites are running on the server) and Webserver and PHP timeout values will all effect how large a Queue can be generated for any particular site. However as a rough estimate even a low spec-ed server that is fairly well utilised should be able to generate a Queue of between 50,000 to 100,000 recipients before a 30 second timeout.
